The Highway Safety Task Force is comprised of officers assigned to patrol shifts or other Units or Divisions within the Department that volunteer to work selective overtime enforcement projects to target highway safety issues such as speeding, drunk-driving and occupant protection violations. These officers are dedicated to helping prevent crashes and reduce injuries and deaths on our highways that occur from these violations.
The Highway Safety Task Force participates in programs such as “Click It or Ticket” and “Checkpoint Strike Force.” The officers participate in sobriety checkpoints and conduct DUI saturation patrols. The Highway Safety Task Force is out in force around holidays and during times when other special events are celebrated.
The Highway Safety Task Force is funded via pass through grants from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration through the Department of Motor Vehicles, Virginia Highway Safety Office. These grants provide overtime funds to law enforcement agencies throughout the Commonwealth to target highway safety concerns such as drunk driving, speeding and occupant protection.
