Clean County Commission Meeting Updates

Ironbound Park Clean Up Volunteers

In our efforts to keep James City County beautiful, the Commission has scheduled a material collection date for the Annual Countywide Spring Cleanup event on Earth Day, April 22. This event was created to encourage citizens to cleanup public common areas and right of ways throughout the month. Over 200 James City County residents participated in last year’s event and together collected 69 tons of litter/debris and 428 tires from 27 different locations. Interested groups and individuals should register online. For more information on how you can participate in this event, please call 757-565-0032.

Did you know that cigarette butts make up 37% of roadside litter? The Commission invested in 10 cigarette disposal stations to increase our efforts in reducing unsightly and environmentally unsafe cigarette butt litter. If your neighborhood association or community group would like more information on how to help reduce cigarette litter contact the Environmental Coordinator at 757-259-5375.

We would like to give a huge THANKS to Kensett Teller for her service to the Clean County Commission over the last three years. Ms. Teller was the driving force behind establishing April as Litter Prevention Month in James City County. She initiated temporary electronic messaging on the roadways to promote litter awareness and worked to install five “Littering is Illegal – Max fine $2500” signs at our County entryways. Ms. Teller has been a tremendous advocate for the business community through her nomination of several businesses for the Quarterly Clean Business Award and the establishment of a partnership between the Commission and the Williamsburg Area Chamber & Tourism Alliance. And on top of all of that she spearheaded the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program by distributing hundreds of educational materials and pocket ashtrays to HOAs, businesses, contractors, visitors and drivers in the Commission’s efforts toward reducing cigarette litter.

Citizens interested in learning more about the Clean County Commission and our brand new affiliation with Keep America Beautiful should join us on Thursday, April 6 from noon-1 p.m. at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center. For more information or to RSVP contact the Environmental Coordinator at 757-259-5375 or
