Aquatics


Learn to Swim, Free Swim Evaluations

There are individual registration periods before each swim lesson session. Registration for October classes is open through Oct. 4. Registration is accepted at the James City County Recreation Center and online at jamescitycountyva.gov/recreation. Having trouble deciding which swim level is appropriate for your child? Our certified Water Safety Instructor will be available 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31 and Wednesday, Nov. 1 to provide free swim evaluations for upcoming classes. Info: 757-259-4185.


American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Class (ages 16+)

Strengthen the immune system, relieve stress and express yourself through recreational music making! Studies have shown simply playing musical instruments can lead to a reduction of stress levels and improved moods. No experience needed. This program is backed by peer-reviewed scientific research found in the international journal titled “Medical Science Monitor.” Register for all four sessions or per session.


Before/After School/Summer Programs


REC Connect

Need before-and-after school programs for your child? The REC Connect program is open to youth ages 5-14, enrolled in grades K-8. One registration packet may be used for both the Before and After School 2017-18 programs and summer camp 2018. Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to date received and space availability. Weekly registration fees apply. Forms can be returned by mail or dropped off at the James City County Recreation, Abram Frink Jr. Community Center, the Freedom Park Interpretive Center or the Satellite Services Office in Toano.  Please allow up to seven business days for processing. Forms can be picked up at any of the drop off locations listed above or downloaded from the REC Connect homepage. Want to get out of the house, do something fun, active and healthy for yourself and your child and meet a group of amazing moms in your own town! Get a great 60 minutes of exercise using your own body weight, bands and balls as well as our outdoor walking trail! Class ends at the My Place Playground for your tots to play. Level 1 Yoga: 5-Week Workshop (ages 14+)

This five-week workshop is designed to establish a sustainable practice and is suitable for those who have never practiced before or had a daily home practice. We’ll methodically work through poses to strengthen the body, improve balance, flexibility and confidence, moving on as the class is ready. We’ll learn and progress together. Doing yoga on a paddleboard at an indoor pool?! That’s something new! We have it, here at the Rec Center! The paddleboards are anchored in the pool to secure your spot. Freedom Park
Join us on the first Saturday of every month this fall for a nature program and guided walk on the new Living Forest Interpretive Trail! One of our expert nature guides will present a program on a different topic each month, then lead children and their parents on a trip through the forest to learn about plants, wildlife, insects and anything else we may encounter! The nature program will take place at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center. The walks will begin at the Freedom Park playground, with a new walk starting every 30 minutes.

Capital Color Ride, New!

Chickahominy Riverfront Park James City County Parks & Recreation welcomes you to a new biking event, a fall time family ride to color” your way through the Virginia Capital Trail! Come venture from Chickahominy Riverfront Park to the James City County Marina and back where you’ll encounter “color stops” (rest stops) with water, snacks and fun recreational activities (optional). Ride as much or little as you like and get marked at the Purple .5-mile mark (1-mile ride), GREEN 2-mile mark (4-mile ride), BLUE 4-mile mark (8-mile ride) or RED 7-mile mark (14-mile ride) and return to Chickahominy Riverfront Park for the GOLD finisher color! The James City County Police Department will also be onsite to register bikes, offer bike safety checks and more! Other local vendors will also available. The registration fee includes refreshments, maps, T-shirt (while supplies last) and lunch. *Children age 9 and younger are free, but must be on a tandem bike or trailer. Boo Bash at the Beach

Enjoy a “day at the beach” with a Halloween twist! Costumes welcome. Trick-or-Treating onsite for ages 12 and younger. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Movie Nights, Free! New!

Bring a blanket and pillow and join us for family friendly movie nights held inside the Frink Center multipurpose room. Popcorn and drinks provided. Scheduled feature is Ghostbusters (1984) PG; movies subject to change. Stop by the Front Desk for a complete schedule of movies. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Movies are held on the first Friday night of every month.


Teen Tournaments (boys and girls ages 12-19) Free!
