Police Go Pink for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Officers wearing pink badges.

Beginning Oct. 1, many officers with James City County Police Department will recognize National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by wearing specially manufactured badges with a pink background. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual health campaign organized to increase awareness about the importance of early detection.

Pink Sergeant BadgeLt. Greg LaRose approached Chief Brad Rinehimer in November 2016 with the idea of purchasing pink badges for the month of October. After seeing both of his grandmothers and a close friend battle breast cancer, he felt that this would be a great way to show a tribute to them and so many others affected, and decided to rally support from the Department. After much planning and research, the project was approved this past spring.

Switching to the pink badge for October was optional, and those officers who chose to participate purchased the badges themselves. Whether their families have been directly affected by the illness or because they just wanted to show support, officers chose to participate for various reasons.

If you see an officer wearing a pink badge, you’re encouraged to ask them about it.
