Aquatics
Learn to Swim, Free Swim Evaluations
There are individual registration periods before each swim lesson session. Registration for November classes is open Nov. 1-10. Registration is accepted at the James City County Recreation Center and online at Aquatics. Having trouble deciding which swim level is appropriate for your child? Our certified Water Safety Instructor will be available 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31 and Wednesday, Nov. 1 to provide free swim evaluations. Freedom Park
Grab your girlfriends and head out for an amazing night of masterpieces and memories! No experience needed! You’ll receive step-by-step instruction to create your very own acrylic painting. Health Rhythms for Seniors (ages 55+) New!
Thursday, Nov. 2, 9-10 a.m.
$15; $10 for JC/W residents

Strengthen the immune system, relieve stress and express yourself through recreational music making! Studies have shown simply playing musical instruments can lead to a reduction of stress levels and improved moods. No experience needed. This program is backed by peer-reviewed scientific research found in the international journal titled “Medical Science Monitor.” 211230-D

Before/After School/Summer Programs
REC Connect
Need before-and-after school programs for your child? Registration is underway. The 2017-18 REC Connect program is open to youth ages 5-14, enrolled in grades K-8. Registration accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to date received and space availability. Weekly registration fees apply. Forms can be returned by mail or dropped off at the James City County Recreation, Abram Frink Jr. Community Center, the Freedom Park Interpretive Center or the Satellite Services Office in Toano.  Please allow up to seven business days for processing. Forms can be picked up at any of the drop off locations listed above or downloaded from REC Connect Registration Form. Want to get out of the house, do something fun, active and healthy for yourself and your child AND meet a group of amazing moms in your own town?! Get a great 60 minutes of exercise using your own body weight, bands and balls as well as our outdoor walking trail! Class ends at the My Place playground for your tots to play. Indoor Pool – SUP Yoga (ages 16+)

Doing yoga on a paddleboard at an indoor pool?! That’s something new! We have it, here at the Recreation Center! The paddleboards are anchored in the pool to secure your spot. Diabetes Risk Assessment Screening & Blood Pressure Check, Free!

Are you at risk for Type 2 Diabetes? Stop by to take the American Diabetes Association Diabetes Risk paper test and discuss your results with an RN. This assessment is based on individual risk factors. There is no blood test. Health and wellness information available. No registration required.

Gait Analysis (all ages) Free!

What could be more basic than walking and running? Local sports chiropractor Dr. Daniel Shaye of Performance Chiropractic will be performing FREE gait analysis. You may learn why your knee hurts, or your back, or your hip... you may even catch injuries BEFORE they happen! Please wear shorts and a tank type shirt for the best analysis. 311668-A

Unwind the Nerves: Yoga Workshop (ages 12+) Free!
Thursday, Nov. 9, 6:30-8 p.m.
James City County Recreation Center
This workshop will be a combination of tractional spine releases and restorative poses. The effect will be to release stress and tension held in the muscles around the spine. We’ll use a variety of poses to encourage the intervertebral muscles to relax. The practice quiets the mind, opens the heart, soothes the nerves and restores mental acuity. Meditation Workshop (ages 16+)

Forest Explorers Walk & Talk (all ages) Free!

Nature Program: Mammals, 9-10 a.m.
Guided Walks: 10 a.m.-noon
Freedom Park
Join us for a nature program and guided walk on the new Living Forest Interpretive Trail! One of our expert nature guides will present a nature program on a different topic each month, then lead children and their parents on a trip through the forest to learn about plants, wildlife, insects and anything else we may encounter! The nature program will take place at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center. The walks will begin at the Freedom Park playground, with a new walk starting every 30 minutes. Weather permitting.

Bring Your Bike Back to Life! Gears, Sprockets and Pedals (ages 10+) New!

Brush the cobwebs off your 10-speed, your beach cruiser or your BMX racer! Don’t worry about the flats or the rust. Bring the bike and supplies; we’ll provide the tools and tips needed to get you ready to ride the Virginia Capital Trail, cruise to Jamestown Island or hit the terrain at Freedom Park! 811801-A

Medicinal Herbs: Myths, Stories & How to Grow (ages 18+)

Briscoe White, co-owner of The Growers Exchange, will share his knowledge on growing herbs. Briscoe’s workplace is in Charles City where his farm covers 650 acres and includes 10 greenhouses. The Growers Exchange ships over 100,000 herb plants of 160 types each year. Offered by the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. Classes are held Freedom Park Interpretive Center. A $5 donation to help the garden grow is appreciated.

Live Well Expo, Free!

Pamper your mind, body and spirit while taking advantage of FREE preventive health screenings during this annual event! Learn about the services for adults ages 55+ that are available in the community and get your vaccinations as well as vision, hearing, cholesterol and blood pressure screenings. Medication checks will be offered by local pharmacists (please bring your medications). Movie Nights, Free! New!

Bring a blanket/pillow and join us for family friendly movie nights held inside the multipurpose room. Popcorn and drinks provided. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Movies are held on the first Friday night of every month. Scheduled Feature: Trolls (2016), Rated PG; movies subject to change. Stop by the Center Front Desk for a schedule of movies.
