Learn to Swim, Free Swim Evaluations
There are individual registration periods before each swim lesson session. Registration for March and April classes is open March 6-16. Registration is accepted at the James City County Recreation Center and online at Aquatics. Having trouble deciding which swim level is appropriate for your child? Our certified Water Safety Instructor will be available 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13 and Wednesday, March 14 to provide free swim evaluations. Classes/evaluations held at the James City County Recreation Center. Info: 757-259-4185.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course (ages 15+)
Friday, March 30, 4-6 p.m. & Monday-Friday, April 2-6, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
$210/session; $205 for JC/W residents (includes swim test, book and materials)
Class meets at the James City County Recreation Center on the first day
• Includes First Aid and CPR certification
• Must attend and pass a swim test (300-yard continuous swim, 100 yards of front crawl, 100 yards of breaststroke and 100 yards of choice of front crawl or breaststroke). Retrieve a 10-pound brick from a depth of 7-8 feet and return 20 yards, keeping both hands on the brick at all times; face must remain out of the water. Tread water for 2 minutes keeping arms out of the water.
• Must attend every class to earn certification
• Failure to complete competency test does not guarantee a full refund
• Cell phone use is not permitted in class and can be grounds for dismissal
• Must be age 15 or older by the last day of class
• Classes held at the JCCRC and Eastern State Hospital

2018 Summer Camp and 2018-19 Before & After School Programs

Looking for summer camp or Before/After School programs for your child? The REC Connect program is open to youth ages 5-14, enrolled in grades K-8. One registration packet may be used for both Summer Camp 2018 and the Before & After School 2018-19 programs. Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis according to postmark date and space availability. Registration forms and program information is available online and at the Recreation Centers, Freedom Park Interpretive Center and Satellite Services Office in Toano. Weekly registration fees apply. Gait Analysis (all ages) Free!

What could be more basic than walking and running? Local sports chiropractor Dr. Daniel Shaye of Performance Chiropractic will be performing free gait analysis. You may learn why your knee hurts, or your back, or your hip – you may even catch injuries BEFORE they happen! Please wear shorts and a tank type shirt for the best analysis. Diabetes Risk Assessment Screening & Blood Pressure Check (ages 12+) Free!

Are you at risk for Type 2 Diabetes? Stop by to take the American Diabetes Association Diabetes Risk paper test and discuss your results with an RN. This aassessment is based on individual risk factors. There is no blood test. Health and wellness information available. No registration required.

This hands-on skills training class prepares you to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies. Learn the skills and knowledge needed to provide care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest through the safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). Shoulder Pain & What To Do About It (ages 21+) Free!

Get a great 60 minutes of exercise using your own body weight, bands and balls as well as our outdoor walking trail! Class ends at the My Place Playground for your tots to play. Level 1 Yoga: 4-Week Workshop (ages 14+)
Thursdays, March 15-April 5, 6-7:30 p.m.

This four-week workshop is designed to establish a sustainable practice and is suitable for those who have never practiced before or had a daily home practice. We’ll methodically work through poses to strengthen the body, improve balance, flexibility and confidence, moving on as the class is ready. We’ll learn and progress together. Join us on the first Saturday of every month this spring for a nature program and guided walk on the new Living Forest Interpretive Trail! One of our expert nature guides will present a nature program on a different topic each month, then lead children and their parents on a trip through the forest to learn about plants, wildlife, insects and anything else we may encounter! The nature program will take place at the Freedom Park Interpretive Center. The walks will begin at the Freedom Park playground, with a new walk starting every 30 minutes. Weather permitting.

Movie Nights, Free!

Bring a blanket/pillow and join us for family friendly movie nights held inside the multipurpose room.  Popcorn and drinks provided. Don’t miss the PAW-TY! Grab your leash and get to the park with your furry friend for a great time! Family and dog-friendly activities, games, fabulous food ($) and more awaits you! Contests onsite include a Fido Fashion Show (best overall, best couple, funniest, most creative), Best Trick and a Dog Photo Contest. Send a high quality photo of your dog to by March 14. Hunts are divided by age and will be held at the Warhill Sports Complex on the baseball fields and at the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center. A combination of positive, energetic and fundamentals-based coaching while maximizing the fun of real game action daily. During this 10-week session, players will learn and refine skills and truly enjoy this total basketball experience appropriate for all skill levels. Learn fundamental skills that help players develop as athletes and teammates. Daily drills, games and competitions will keep the fun level high. Instructor: One on One Basketball Coaches.
