The part-time position that Ryan enjoyed with James City County Fire Department transitioned into a full-time position and in 2004 Ryan became a career Fire Fighter Medic with James City County Fire Department.

In 2009, Ryan was promoted to Fire Rescue Captain and served at Station 2 until being selected as the Departments training officer.  In July 2013, Ryan was promoted to Deputy Fire Chief and is second-in-command to Fire Chief Tal Luton.

Ryan remains active with the technical rescue team and is a rescue specialist with Virginia Taskforce 2 USAR team in Virginia Beach.
