Support Services Division
The Support Services Division is led by District Chief Bob Ryalls. Bob has the additional responsibility of Public Information Officer or PIO for the department. The division is home to a number of department functional services.
The Training Section is responsible for in service education programs for our firefighters. The training section also provides management and instructor support to the Tidewater Regional Fire Academy (TRFA). Recruit Firefighters attend the 18 week TRFA course in their first year of employment to acquire certifications in Basic Firefighting, Firefighter Rescue, Rope (High Level) Rescue, Vehicle Rescue, Emergency Vehicle Operations, Advanced Firefighting, Trench Rescue, and Confined Space Rescue. The Training Section operates out of the Fire Department Training Center located at 5077 John Tyler Hwy. The Training Section is under the direction of Captain Mel Bryant.
The EMS Section is responsible for Logistics, Training, and Business Management for the Emergency Services Section. All firefighters are trained as Emergency Medical Technicians, and over half of them are certified as Advanced Life Support providers. ALS providers are either EMT Paramedics or EMT Intermediates. The EMS Section is under the direction of Fire Rescue Captain Al Catlett and our Operational Medical Director. Each year the fire department provides emergency medical care to over 4,000 patients. The department staffs four advanced life support ambulances located at county fire stations, and provides staffing support for one ALS ambulance to the James City Volunteer Rescue Squad in the western end of the County. The EMS Section manages all EMS in service training for the department. The EMS Section also makes sure the all Federal and State Agency Licensure requirements are met, and provides for a comprehensive service quality assurance program.
EMS Transport Fees effective July 1, 2007 - Billing for ambulance transport by the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division of the James City County Fire Department began on July 1, 2007.
