Records Management maintains closed building and development files for James City County.

Frequently Asked Questions

What records do we maintain?

All closed out zoning files, site plans, building permits, accessory permits, wetland files, sign permits, rezoning files, master plans, subdivisions files, etc., are available in our office.

What records and drawings are retained permanently?

All documents and drawings are retained permanently, except for residential plans.

Do we keep residential building plans permanently?

No. Residential building plans are retained for five years after the certificate of occupancy is issued.

Are files available for viewing?

Yes. Closed building and development files are available for viewing in our office.

What records do we not have?

  • Proposed or ongoing cases, please call Building Safety and Permits at 757-253-6626 or Planning at 757-253-6685.
  • Recorded plats or deeds are located at the Clerk of the Circuit Court's office at the Williamsburg/James City Courthouse. The Courthouse is located at 5201 Monticello Avenue, Suite 6, Williamsburg, VA 23188. Their telephone number is 757-564-2242

 

Various circuit court records are also available on the Internet for viewing and downloading. However, in order to search such records, an account name and password are required.
