Grants available – County neighborhoods groups and homeowner associations have until Oct. 1 to apply for a grant award up to $500 through the Fall 2012 Good Neighbor Environment Matching Grant Program.
The Program, sponsored by the James City Clean County Commission, enhances the sense of community through neighborhood involvement in the development and accomplishment of a sustainable neighborhood project.
Categories are Physical Improvement/Sustainable Landscaping and Multi-Neighborhood Project Partnerships. The application is available online. The grant awards will be announced on Oct. 15.
Stop ID theft – The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identity stolen each year. The James City County Police Department and the County’s Communications Office have produced a new video to help you understand the threat and know how to respond.
Topics covered in the video include the sources of identity theft, ATM skimming, warning signs and what to do if your identity has been stolen. The video is available on YouTube and on JCC TV on Cox Cable Channel 48 and online. For more information, visit the website or call 757-253-1800.
Hear it on the radio – When the power goes out and phone lines are down, getting information from the outside world can be a challenge. Make sure you have a portable radio and plenty of batteries so you can get County information on Tide FM 92.3, Bach FM 107.9 and WMBG AM 740.
You may also want to have a NOAA Weather Radio to receive continuous weather information directly from the nearest National Weather Service office. The radios broadcast official Weather Service warnings, watches, forecasts and other hazard information 24 hours a day, seven days a week. NOAA radios are available at local retailers and online.
