Get ready – Hurricane season runs June 1-Nov. 30. What does that mean for us in James City County?
All summer long, e-FYI will feature tips on how you can prepare your family and property. In the meantime, be sure to monitor local news and weather, sign up for JCCAlert and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
Manage stormwater – Make plans to attend a stormwater management workshop on lakes, ponds and rain gardens on June 13 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Rd., Rooms A and B.
Topics covered will include the function and maintenance of Stormwater Management Facilities (BMPs), the design and installation of rain gardens, aquatic problems in lakes and ponds and maintenance costs. Pre-register by June 11 by email or by calling 757-259-1443. Space is limited.
Store your boat – Need a place to store your boat or RV? Check out Chickahominy Riverfront Park. Storage fees are $45 per month for James City County and Williamsburg residents and $65 per month for nonresidents.
For more information including payment options and contract details, stop by the Park Office at 1350 John Tyler Hwy., between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. daily, call 757-258-5020 or visit the website.
The pools are open on weekends through June 10 from noon-6 p.m. They'll open daily June 16-Sept. 3 from noon-6 p.m. Children ages 5 and younger swim free. Resident youth and seniors (age 55 and older) swim for $2 and resident adults swim for $3. Season passes are available and may be used at both parks. For more information, visit the website or call 757-259-5360.
Scoop the poop – Picking up after your dog is not only courteous to your neighbors, but also to your local environment. Pet waste contains harmful bacteria which can create significant health and environmental issues if left on roadsides and sidewalks where it can be washed into storm drains.
If you believe your neighborhood has a pet waste problem, apply for a free Dogipot DogValet. They can be placed along walking trails, in parks or in any other public area commonly used by pet owners. For more information, visit the website or call 757-259-1446.
