Structure Fire at Powhatan Plantation - 11/01/01
JAMES CITY COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT
James City County Fire Department units responded to a structure fire at Powhatan Plantation located at 3601 Ironbound Rd. this afternoon.
The James City County 911 Center received a cellular phone call at 1:48 p.m. this afternoon reporting that a building was on fire at the time share resort. Three engine companies, two ladder companies and an EMS company were dispatched to the incident. Williamsburg Fire Department provided on the of the ladder companies as mutual aid assistance. The first arriving unit was on the scene at 1:53 p.m.
First arriving units reported a golf cart on fire, into the side of the building. The fire involved the exterior of the two story building known as the “Grill”. Damage to the exterior of the building was moderate. There was some minor smoke damage to the interior of the building. The fire was contained within the first five minutes after arrival. The fire was declared under control and completely out at 2:40 p.m. 20 Firefighters were on the scene for a little over 1 hour.
Two golf carts were totally destroyed in the fire. The fire started under the seat of one of the golf carts and spread to the building and the second golf cart. The course of the fire was determined to be an equipment malfunction related to the first golf cart. No one was injured in the fire.
