Gas Leak closes Tewning Road for over an hour - 03/08/02
Date: March 8, 2002
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: James City County Fire Department
Units from the James City County Fire Department responded to a natural gas leak on Tewning Road today at 08:20 AM this morning.
The gas leak was from a Virginia Natural Gas line that had been cut by a contractor digging in the area. The gas leak led to the evacuation of about 75 people from businesses adjacent to the leak area including the Virginia Department of Transportation facility nearby on Ironbound Road. Patients at Eastern Hospitalwere confined to the inside of buildings on the Hospital grounds.
Natural Gas is lighter that air, thus the highest hazard area was directly adjacent to the leak. Because the leak was directly next to Tewning Road, that roadway was closed from 08:20 AM until 9:40 AM. Virginia Natural Gas responded and shut the gas off, and is making a repair.
