The Virginia Citizens Planning Association (VCPA) named James City County resident Dr. Lisa Curry Virginia Citizen Planner of the Year at its annual conference on October 12, 2003.
For the last two years, Dr. Curry put a great deal of her personal life “on hold” in order to ensure that James City County’s comprehensive plan update was not only effective but also reflected the views of its citizens through an extensive citizen input process. Dr. Curry first served on the James City County Community Participation Team, which oversaw citizen participation in the review process. The team met weekly from July 2002 to March 2003. It designed public involvement opportunities, led and supervised outreach efforts, and evaluated the results of public input meetings. The CPT chose Dr. Curry to serve as their representative to the Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee, which formulated the policy, goals, and actions of the plan. Dr. Curry opened each Steering Committee meeting by discussing citizen comments related to the topic.
Dr. Curry’s efforts were instrumental in James City County’s being recognized with two awards for its comprehensive plan: the Public Education Award from the Virginia chapter of the American Planning Association and the President’s Award for Entrepreneurial Government from the Virginia Municipal League. According to the VCPA press release, "Dr. Curry demonstrated that citizens can and do make a difference in their communities and her commitment to James City County is a credit to the concept of citizen planning."
Dr. Curry will be presented with the VCPA award and a resolution from the James City County Board of Supervisors during its regularly scheduled meeting on November 12, 2003, at 7 PM. The 2003 Comprehensive Plan is available online at www.jccEgov.com. Call the County’s Planning Division at 253-6685 for more information.
