Apartment Fire - 1214 Norwyk Lane - March 13

James City County Fire Department responded to an apartment fire on 1214 Norwyk Lane in the Spotswood Commons Apartments at 7:07 p.m., on Thursday, March 13. Spotswood Commons was built last year and is located on Longhill Road near Olde Towne Road. The fire was ignited by grease being heated up on a kitchen range stove in preparation for cooking that had been left unattended. The resident was identified as Mr. Carl Jones. There were no injuries as a result of this incident. The fire damage was confined to the kitchen cabinets directly above the stove area.

The leading cause of fires in James City County is unattended cooking. In the last two years, 18 percent of all building fires in James City County began in the kitchen. In the past, there has been loss of life and significant injury from fires that have started because of unattended cooking here in the county. Apartments in Spotswood Commons were built with a fire sprinkler system installed in each apartment. The sprinkler system activated early in this incident extinguishing the fire before it had an opportunity to grow beyond the kitchen area, thus significantly reducing the fire damage that could have occurred, and potentially saving lives.
