James City County Fire Department

January 8, 2003

At 3:57 a.m. this morning, units from the James City County Fire Department were dispatched to a Structure Fire at 4001 4-H Club Road in James City County. 4-H Club Road is near the Jamestown Ferry off of Jamestown Rd. James City County Police units arrived on the scene and reported that the wood frame home was burning.

Fire Department units arriving on the scene found an occupant (Ms. Marie Saez) standing in the front yard. Ms. Saez had burns on her hand and arm. The fire was brought under control in just less than one hour. 3 Engine Companies, 1 Ladder Company, and 3 medic ambulances were on the scene with 21 Firefighters. Ms. Saez was transported to Williamsburg Community Hospital with 2nd degree burns to one Arm and Hand. She was treated and released from the Hospital early this morning.

According to Ms Saez, she was awakened by her dog barking at her bedroom door. She opened the door and saw a fire to her immediate left. When she stepped outside the bedroom, her left sleeve caught fire. She went into the dining room, and stopped, dropped, and rolled to extinguish her clothing that was on fire. She then went to the kitchen and retrieved a Fire Extinguisher thinking that she could put out the fire. Ms. Saez abandoned the thought of extinguishing the fire when she realized that the extinguisher was too small for the fire. She woke up her two daughters, Jessica and Marisa ages 15 and 13. The daughters were sleeping in adjacent bedrooms. The family exited the home. Ms. Saez went next door to have a neighbor call the fire department. The neighbor did not have a phone, he drove to a 7-11 store approximately 1 ½ miles from the residence and reported the fire to the James City County 911 Center. Ms. Saez stated that she did not have a working smoke detector in the home.

The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental. The actual cause has been narrowed down to either an electrical appliance, or to the electrical control panel. The home was a total loss. Ms. Saez was renting the home; the owner is Mr. C. Lewis Waltrip. The Saez family did not have renter insurance coverage. The family is staying with relatives in the area. The American Red Cross is assisting the family. There were no other injuries. Ms. Saez said that she had three dogs in the home. Only one animal was found in the building, it had perished in the fire.
