Seven of James City County's programs have been awarded 2003 Achievement Awards from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The programs acknowledged include Chickahominy Riverfront Park, Automatic External Defibrillator Program, Powhatan Creek Watershed Management Plan, 2002 Greenway Master Plan, Working Towards Wellness, 4th Grade Learn to Swim, and Cap It. In addition to the Achievement Award, Cap It was also recognized as the "Best of Category (Rural)" in the Environmental Protection and Energy Category.
Begun in 1970, this non-competitive awards program seeks to give national recognition to innovative county government programs that afford a positive impact on the county as a whole. The success of the programs is determined by measurable results, such as cost saving, increased productivity, or improved service to the general public.
A complete list of winning programs as well as summaries can be found on NACo's web site at http://www.naco.org. Selections from each program will also be featured in the County News column, "Hats Off," over the next several months. The awards will be presented during the Annual Conference in July 2003 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
