The former Director of Communications for the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) in Richmond has been hired as a Communications Specialist in James City County. Ruth Richey began her new job April 1.

Richey's new duties will include publication of the County's newsletter "FYI" and the County's annual progress report, serving as an emergency public information officer during countywide crises, and a variety of other media relations and public information work.

Richey had worked at VACo since 1996 where she was editor of County Connections and the association's legislation bulletin, among other duties. Before joining VACo, Richey was the editor of the former Richmond Afro-American newspaper and was previously a copy editor for the former Richmond News Leader and the Richmond Times-Dispatch. She earned her degree in Mass Communications from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Richey, her husband, and two sons currently live in Chesterfield County, but plan to relocate to the County. The couple's youngest son is a high school junior and the other is currently serving in Iraq with the 276th Engineer Battalion.
