Tornado Preparedness Day - March 16, 2004 - James City County, Virginia
The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and the National Weather Service (NWS) will cosponsor Tornado Preparedness Day March 16, 2004. The featured event that day will be the annual statewide tornado drill, which begins at 9:45 a.m. The drill is designed to prepare schools and businesses so they can protect students, employees and others if a tornado warning is issued.
On the day of the drill, each Virginia NWS office will issue "Test" tornado warnings using a Severe Weather Statement (SVS). A short EAS activation message will then be sent via NOAA Weather Radio. EAS event code RMT(Required Monthly Test) will be used to ensure that all NOAA Weather Radio receivers activate for the drill.
The NWS will begin publicizing the drill March 1, 2004 by transmitting Public Information Statements announcing the upcoming drill. VDEM will also promote the event by sending campaign kits (to include news releases, PSAs and fact sheets) to print and electronic media across the state. They will also feature a special tornado preparedness section on their Web site at www.vaemergency.com. In addition, local emergency managers will receive an e-mail announcement when these campaign materials are available.
