JAMES CITY COUNTY, VA -- James City County Fire Department responded to a structure fire on December 8, 2005 at the Family Inns of America (5413 Airport Road). Fire units arrived first at 9:36 pm and found Room 233 on the second floor engulfed in fire. Additional fire units from York County, Williamsburg, and James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department assisted. The fire was knocked down in the room of origin shortly after arrival; units remained on the scene until 12:27 am checking for fire extension and assisting in the investigation. Fire damage was limited to the room and immediately outside of it. There was smoke damage to adjacent rooms. One firefighter received minor burns to his hands but did not require treatment; one guest was checked for shortness of breath but did not require treatment or transport. Several guests were displaced—at the time of the fire the motel was making arrangements. Red Cross also responded. James City County Fire Marshals have completed their investigation. The occupant, Douglas van Houten, age 49, was in the room at the time of the fire. He attempted to extinguish the fire before leaving to summon help. Mr. van Houten was not injured. Fire Marshals have ruled out all causes except for discarded smoking materials.
