James City County has named District Chief Joe Davis as the Deputy Fire Chief. He succeeds Tal Luton, who became Fire Chief effective Aug. 10.
"I have every confidence in Joe's ability as the newly promoted Deputy Fire Chief," said Fire Chief Tal Luton. "Joe's experience as Deputy Fire Marshal, Shift Operations Commander, and most recently as director of support services has provided the department with a skilled and talented leader." Davis' new position is effective Oct. 1.
Davis started with the department as a firefighter in 1984, and was promoted to senior firefighter in 1988. In 1989, he was named fire inspector/deputy fire marshal. In 2002, he became District Fire Chief, Operations Shift Commander. He was promoted in 2004 to District Fire Chief, Support Services Division, which includes EMS Administration, Fire Marshal's Office and Training. He also serves as the department's Public Information Officer. Davis began his career in firefighting as a volunteer at age 17 with the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department.
He graduated from Thomas Nelson Community College with an associate's degree in fire science in 1993. Additional certifications include Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor III and Certified Fire Official. He is a member of the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association, Virginia Fire Prevention Association and International Association of Arson Investigators, Virginia Chapter.
