James City County will hold a sign dedication ceremony on Saturday, January 15, at 11 a.m. in honor of the renaming of Colby Road to Theodore Allen Road.
James City County's Board of Supervisors approved the street name change this past November to honor the late Theodore Allen, dubbed the "Mayor of Centerville." The Centerville Community Association requested renaming the road for Allen, who was past president of the association for many years. Allen, who died last July, also supported efforts to name Freedom Park in recognition of its significance as the site of a free black settlement.
"Theodore Allen left a legacy of caring, compassion, hard work, and unity in the citizens of the community and brought about positive transformation," the Board's resolution stated.
County Administrator Sandy Wanner and Powhatan Supervisor Michael J. Brown will be speakers at the ceremony, which will be held at the corner of Colby and Centerville Roads.
