Outdoor Water Regulations Begin May 1

OUTDOOR WATER USE SCHEDULE

Outdoor water use allowed between midnight and 9 a.m. and between 5p.m. and midnight. No outdoor water use permitted on Mondays or between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to allow for system recovery.

(James City County) Outdoor water regulations for James City Service Authority (JCSA) customers go into effect May 1st through September 30th. The regulations only apply to customers of the JCSA, but citizens with private wells and residents in the neighborhoods of Kingsmill and Grove who are customers of Newport News Water Works are encouraged to follow the regulations. Under the regulations:

 

JCSA customers can use water outdoors for any purpose, at any time, on any day, as long as it is with a container or a hose with an automatic shutoff nozzle.  The hose must be attended at all times.

 

Any other method of outdoor water use, such as irrigation systems, sprinklers, or hoses without automatic shutoff nozzles, must follow the Outdoor Water Use Schedule, which is based on street address. Under the schedule: JCSA customers with odd addresses can use water outdoors between midnight and 9 a.m. and between 5 p.m. and midnight on Wednesdays, Fridays & Sundays. Neighborhood common areas are considered odd addresses. For example, odd number addresses such as 101 Main Street can irrigate on Wednesdays, Fridays & Sundays.

 

JCSA customers with even addresses can use water outdoors between midnight and 9 a.m. and between 5 p.m. and midnight on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays. For example, even number addresses such as 100 Main Street can irrigate on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays. All irrigation systems installed after March 8, 2005 in James City County and supplied water by the JCSA are required to have a rain sensor that is adjusted to shut off automatically when one-fourth inch of rain has fallen.

 

JCSA customers with automatic irrigation systems that were installed prior to March 8, 2005 without a rain sensor are encouraged to install a rain sensor. All automatic irrigation systems must have a backflow prevention device permitted through Code Compliance.

Residents may also call the Outdoor Water Info Line at (757) 259-4152 for a recorded message, the JCSA Environmental Education Coordinator at (757) 253-6859, or JCSA Customer Service at (757) 253-6800. Violation is a Class I Misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $2,500. Violations may be reported by calling JCSA Operations at (757) 229-7421.
