James City County has rescinded a ban on outdoor open burning by residents and businesses due to the rain that the area has received over the past few days. Less windy conditions and new growth on trees also have contributed to reduced fire risk. The County, which put the burn ban in effect March 15, lifted the ban Monday afternoon.

James City County reminds citizens that they must still comply with state forestry laws that prohibit burning until after 4 p.m. daily through April 30. There are also local ordinances regulating burning.

Citizens are still urged to exercise caution, including completely extinguish smoking materials before discarding and keeping brush and other debris cleared away from houses and other buildings.  Any sign of fire, including brush or wood fires, should be reported immediately by calling 911.
