Williamsburg Area Transport (WAT) names Executive Director

Williamsburg Area Transport (WAT) has named a new Executive Director who will start his position here March 1.
Mark Rickards, who currently works for the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (VDRPT), was selected to lead the transportation system for James City County, the City of Williamsburg and the Bruton District of York County.
"Mark Rickards has worked with many of the transit systems in Virginia providing technical assistance and managing grants. He has also been WAT' s liaison for several years and knows our system and the Williamsburg area well," said Doug Powell, WAT Secretary/Treasurer. "He has also been very involved with the Jamestown 2007 commemoration at the state level."
Rickards has worked as Urban Program Manager for VDRPT where he has managed the grant program for the past 12 years. From 1990 to 1993, he was General Manager of the Asheville, N.C. Transit Authority. He was previously Assistant Manager of the Wilmington, N.C. Transit Authority.
Rickards has a master' s degree in urban planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor' s in political science from High Point University.
WAT is currently undergoing a transition to become part of a regional transit authority. A General Assembly bill to create the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority has passed the Senate and is pending approval by the House of Delegates. The transit authority will also include the College of William and Mary and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
