Since there were no names on the ballot in the Stonehouse District for School Board Member, the Electoral Board has decided that the only way to ensure a complete and accurate review of the assignment of votes to candidates must include an inspection of the ballots for that race.
This decision is in accordance with Virginia Election Law and Virginia State Board of Election guidelines, and requires that the canvass for the Stonehouse District Precincts be temporarily suspended until those records are reviewed. The ballot review will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, November 9, 2007 at 101 Mounts Bay Road, Building C Conference Room, at the James City County Office Complex (near Kingsmill off Route 199).
An Electoral Board Canvass of Results is performed for every election. Typically, the Electoral Board relies on machine tapes and the Statement of Results (SOR), a document prepared by Officers of Election, to complete the canvass and determine names of the candidates on the ballot that receive the highest number of votes.
The James City County Electoral Board will continue with its canvass of the rest of the locality, and will re-commence the canvass of the Stonehouse District, when the records are made available. Final unofficial results will be released as soon as the canvass is completed.
