James City County Parks and Recreation’s Youth Advisory Council is hosting a Home Run Derby fundraiser in memory of two local youth – David Todd McLane II and Christopher Gavora. Both loved baseball and played for local high schools. After speaking with their families, the Youth Advisory Commission wanted to raise money for scholarships in their names – the David Todd McLane II Scholarship Fund and the Christopher Gavora Army Aviation Scholarship Fund. McLane, a member of the Youth Council, was killed in a car accident several years ago. Gavora died recently, the result of a head injury while playing baseball.
The Home Run Derby will be held on Saturday, April 28, noon to 6 p.m. at the James City/Williamsburg Community Center on Longhill Road. All proceeds will be divided by the families to support the scholarships. Everyone is invited to come out and participate while remembering the support these two young men offered to other students, their families and friends. The on-site registration fee is $10. Winners will be announced in five divisions – Division A for ages 5-6; B for 7-10; C for 11-13, D for 14-17 and Division E for ages 18 and older.
If you or your business can help support this community event, your donations will support prizes for the top three winners in each of the five divisions. Each derby participant will receive a goody bag filled with donated items such as your merchandise, tickets, passes, coupons and promotional giveaways. In return for your donation, your company poster, banner or sign will be displayed during the event as well as the mention of your business in announcements throughout the day.
