James City County government has expanded their online presence through the recent creation of a Facebook page, an account on del.icio.us, a social bookmarking site for sharing favorite websites, and an account on YouTube. Accessible from the County’s website, www.jccEgov.com, the County plans to pilot the Facebook page, del.icio.us and YouTube for 60 days to determine if they are useful resources for the citizens. Use of the sites is free.
Facebook, a relatively new phenomenon with primarily younger users, may help the County reach an audience that does not rely solely on traditional media to get information. The County plans to use the site to:
• Post videos and photos
• Recruit for employment
• Advertise upcoming public meetings
• Encourage interaction between the users and their government.
The County hopes Facebook will encourage interaction between the users and their government. Registered users can post comments and questions on the County’s Discussion Board.
While the majority of the resources on Facebook are available to those without an account, some components may not be available without first signing up for the free registration.
Information posted on the Facebook site, with the exception of the discussion board, will remain available online at the County’s website www.jccEgov.com.
