James City County Police Department has been awarded a grant from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ Highway Safety Office for $35,010 to augment its traffic enforcement efforts.

This Highway Safety Initiative has been established to increase the enforcement of traffic-related violations and improve equipment assignment in order to increase enforcement and prosecution.  This project is fully funded by DMV and requires no cash match from the County.

A portion of the funds will be used for the purchase of a digital in-car camera and a radar unit.  The remaining funds will be used towards officer overtime for traffic enforcement of speed, driving under the influence, occupancy protection (seat belts & child safety seats), and other traffic related offenses.

Efforts will be conducted in conjunction with the DMV statewide initiatives, such as the Checkpoint Strikeforce and Click It or Ticket programs, as well as carrying out other condensed education and enforcement activities throughout the twelve (12) month grant period.  The enforcement initiatives will consist of saturated patrols, routine patrols, and checkpoints scheduled and held at pre-determined locations.

Enforcement activities will provide greater traffic safety benefits for area residents and visitors by increasing the Department’s abilities in its traffic enforcement efforts.  The equipment received through this grant will aid the law enforcement officers in performing the tasks necessary to complete the safety program campaigns, as well as, maintaining a safe environment for the citizens and officers.
