Norge Depot Renovation Progress

Date: September 22, 2008
Contact: Nina Costello, Historical Commission

Phone: (757) 566-3723

The Norge Train Depot, currently located on the grounds of the Croaker Library, is in immediate need of donations to match a grant received by James City County from the Virginia Department of Transportation.  The County Historical Commission has a deadline to raise approximately $85,000 to further the preservation effort.

Donations will be used to restore the exterior and interior of the Depot to match the appearance depicted in historical records.  The exterior restoration project started in September and is expected to be complete by the end of 2008.  The Commission needs to raise as many donations as possible before the interior restoration projects starts in 2009.

Donations can be in many forms including cash, building materials, labor, or even historic train artifacts to be displayed in the Depot once the restoration is complete.

The Norge Depot was built sometime between 1906 and 1908 by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company.  Originally located adjacent to the railroad tracks at the end of Peach street in Norge, the Depot was moved to its current location in 2006 when faced with demolition.

Please call 566-3723 for more information or a list of items needed for the restoration; or mail donations in care of the Historical Commission to 101-A Mounts Bay Road, Williamsburg VA 23187.  Checks should be made out to Treasurer, James City County.  While the County Historical Commission can receive charitable contributions, each donor will need to consult with their own tax advisor as to whether or not a proposed donation will be deductible.
