The James City County Police Department has been awarded a grant in the amount of $5,000 from the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) to target underage drinking within our community. The Community Services Unit (CSU) of the Police Department will front this project, and School Resource Officers (SRO’s), whom are within the CSU, will be heavily involved; however, all Officers within the Department are responsible for enforcing underage drinking laws in our jurisdiction.
The Department recognizes our need to make a greater impact on the children and parents in our community in order to address this problem of underage drinking. Our project increases our ability to reach the children and parents in our community about the dangers of alcohol; and, these tools will make a strong statement.
The Department attends and hosts several community events throughout the year where alcohol education is discussed, and SRO’s are responsible for several alcohol educational classes. The Department also works closely with the schools in programs, such as the Every 30 Minutes program and in the driver’s education classes offered in the schools. The equipment and resources obtained through this grant will augment existing programs and increase officer capacity to make a strong impact on, not just teenagers, but also younger children, and parents. Through this project, we aim to reduce underage alcohol consumption.
During a time when Public Safety Departments are facing budget constraints throughout the Country, the James City County Police Department is appreciative of the support of the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. The Department continues to look for opportunities, like these, that allow the Department to increase its services to citizens without relying solely on tax revenue.
