Special/Family Events

The Great Park Pursuit (all ages)
$15; $10 for JC/W residents
Come discover your County parks by participating in the Great Park Pursuit, a self-guided tour where you’ll be challenged to visit at least nine parks before September 2010. The registration fee includes a T-shirt, activity log and water bottle. Quarterly drawings include an annual drawing with prize packages featuring outdoor sporting goods and equipment. Visit the James City/Williamsburg Community Center, the James River Community Center or Satellite Services for more information and an activity log.

Children’s Creative Dance (ages 3-5)
Thursday, September 10-October 8, 1-2pm
$30; $25 for JC/W residents
James City/Williamsburg Community Center
Children will be introduced to the field of dance through movement, rhythm and simple routines. Students should wear appropriate dance attire - tights, leotard and ballet slippers. Information: or 259-3200.

Mommy and Me Ballet (ages 3-5 with moms)
Wednesday, September 16-October 21, 10:30-11:30am
 $35; $30 JC/W residents

You and your little one will gain flexibility and learn the basic positions and steps of ballet alongside each another! No experience necessary. Information: or 259-3200.


Rec Connect – Before/After School Programs
Registration forms, program information and fees are available for download at or call the Rec Connect Info Line at 259-3170. The program runs September 8 through the last day of class for W-JCC public schools. The Before/After program is offered at all elementary schools, Monday-Friday, 7am until school starts and from school dismissal until 6pm.  An After-School program only is offered at Berkeley and Toano Middle Schools. James Blair students are transported to Berkeley. $30 initial registration fee for James City/Williamsburg residents. Discounts of 15-75% are available to any qualified resident based on total income. For more information on financial aid, please call 259-5416.


Intro to Ballet (ages 5-7)
Sunday, September 20-October 25, 1-2pm
$35; $30 for JC/W residents

Children will be introduced to the basic positions and steps of ballet. No experience necessary. Information: or 259-3200.


Ballet I (ages 7-9)
Sunday, September 20-October 25, 2-3pm
$35; $30 for JC/W residents
James City/Williamsburg Community Center
Children will explore basic ballet positions at the barre and in center work in combinations. Children should have some exposure to ballet (or are super fast learners!). Information: or 259-3200.


English Country Dancing for Children (ages 6-18)
Thursday, September 10-October 8, 2-3pm
$30; $25 for JC/W residents
James City/Williamsburg Community Center
If you love the Colonial and Regency lifestyle, then this is the class for you! Students will learn the basic steps, patterns and routines of social line dancing, while listening to period music and having fun at the same time! Students should wear long skirts/dress pants. Red Cross Babysitting Course (ages 12+)
Saturday, September 12, 10am-2pm
$75; $70 for JC/W residents
James City/Williamsburg Community Center
This course covers all the basics of babysitting – childcare, fire and home safety, first aid plus how to set up your own business. At the completion of the class, participants will receive a babysitter’s textbook, babysitting certificate, and first aid kit.

Youth Sports
Football Kicking Clinic (boys and girls ages 9-17)

Warhill Sports Complex
This special clinic, taught by former Hampton University Kicker Todd Covington,

Inclusion/Specialized Therapeutic Recreation
Buddy Art (ages 6 and older with special needs)
Saturday, September 19, 3-4pm
James City/Williamsburg Community Center
Offered in partnership with This Century Art Gallery, thismultimedia workshop helps participants experience all different types of art. Students will be assigned one-on-one  Buddies. The Buddies, volunteers from the College of William & Mary’s Sharpe Community Scholars Program, will provide individualized attention and assistance. Teensational Socials (ages 12-22 with physical, emotional or cognitive disabilities)
Saturday, September 26, 1-3pm
$20; $15 for JC/W residents
The socials are an opportunity for youth to practice social skills, meet new people, learn new skills and have a great time! Sessions held monthly. Each session includes a craft, new activity and a snack. Trained and experienced staff will work on communication, teamwork and socialization. Space is limited! For more information, call 259-5454.


Buddy Baseball (girls and boys between the ages of 5 and 20 with special needs)
Sunday, September 13 - November 1, 3-4pm
Warhill Sports Complex
Players are assisted by one-on-one volunteer Buddies, who make it possible to adapt play to individual player needs. Buddy Baseball is provided in partnership with the Williamsburg Youth Baseball League. For more information and to register, call Joel Schwartz at 565-2795.


Adults, Special Interests
Swing Dancing – Level 1 (ages 13+)
Wednesday, September 9-30, 7-8pm
$30; $25 for JC/W residents
James City/Williamsburg Community Center
Learn the basics of Swing Dancing, with easy-to-do turns. Elements of Lindy Hop and Charleston will be introduced. Partners encouraged, but not necessary. Information: or 259-3200.


Swing Dancing – Level 2 (ages 13+)(Prerequisite: Swing Dancing Level 1)
Wednesday, September 9-30, 8-9pm
$30; $25 for JC/W residents
James City/Williamsburg Community Center
We’ll review Level 1, then add on exciting new combinations and the basics of closed-position. Learn the steps to different tempos of music. Transitions into Charleston and Lindy Hop will be introduced. Information: or 259-3200.


Bellydance I (ages 13+)
Monday, September 14-October 5, 7-8pm
$40; $35 for JC/W residents
James City/Williamsburg Community Center
Join us in this introductory class and learn the muscle groups, concepts and basic techniques of bellydancing. This class will focus on posture, muscle contraction drills, and a sequence of basic steps to get you moving and dancing. No previous dance experience required.  Information: or 259-3200.


Learn To Swim Programs


Open registration will be held September 21 – October 4. After you have successfully passed a class, you can register for the next level during this two-week open registration period. If you’re unsure of your or your child’s swimming needs or level, FREE swim evaluations will be held at the JCWCC, 4:30-6:30pm, on Tuesday, September 22 and Wednesday, September 30. 259-4185.



Adult Group Fitness Classes (ages 13+). Professional instruction in a wide variety of classes offered at a variety of levels in aerobics, cardiovascular training and for weight loss. Access requires either a combo pass or wristband. Class schedules and fees are posted online at and  at the James City/Williamsburg Community Center Front Desk.


Water Fitness Classes (all ages & swimming abilities). Classes range from water walking to water cardio and are taught by nationally certified water fitness instructors. 259-4185.

Holiday Closing
The James City/Williamsburg and the James River community centers will be closed on Monday, September 7 in observance of Labor Day. Have a safe and happy holiday!
