Feedback Needed for JCC Cable Franchise Negotiation

As James City County prepares to negotiate a new cable franchise with Cox Communications, community feedback on customer service, future needs and technical services as provided by Cox Communications is an important part of the process.  The County’s Cable Communications Committee has prepared a survey and scheduled a public meeting to gather input from current subscribers and non-subscribers. All County citizens are encouraged to participate since a franchise agreement can impact economic development, public safety, education and quality of life in the County.

There are several ways to give feedback:

  1. Complete an on-line survey at www.jccEgov.com/cablesurvey
  2. Pick up a copy of the survey to mail in or drop off at the James City County Library (7770 Croaker Road), the James City/Williamsburg Community Center (5301 Longhill Road), the Satellite Office (3127 Forge Road) or the Human Services Building (5249 Olde Towne Road).
  3. Attend the public input meeting on October 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the Building F Board Room of the Government Complex.

A community needs assessment is one component of the franchise review and negotiation.  County staff will also examine Cox Communications’ compliance with the existing agreement, financial records, and will review technological, statutory and regulatory changes since the current franchise was adopted in 1995. The franchise ordinance with Cox Communications is a non-exclusive agreement which allows for more than one provider of cable services to negotiate a franchise with the County.

Results from the survey and public input meeting are expected to be available in January 2010. A new franchise agreement is scheduled to be considered by the Board of Supervisors in May 2010.

For more information about the County’s non-exclusive franchise with Cox Communications, visit www.jccEgov.com/cable or call 886-4006.
