In light of the suspension of work on the King William Reservoir project, the City of Newport News has assured James City County that they will continue to provide water as stipulated in the contract signed in March 2008.
County Administrator Sandy Wanner reacted to the suspension decision saying, “It is a shame that after pursuing a surface water supply on the Virginia Peninsula for 31 years in order to provide for our growing citizen demand and for the economic vitality of the region, that once again, federal agencies have declined to be allies.”
Under the contract, James City Service Authority can purchase 4 million gallons per day during normal periods and up to 6.5 million gallons per day during peak demand.
