Good News for JCC Homeowners with Flood Insurance

In recognition of floodplain management activities implemented by James City County, homeowners covered by standard flood insurance policies now qualify for a 10 percent discount in their premiums. Standard policies include coverage for properties located within the FEMA floodplain. Homeowners covered by preferred risk policies that cover property outside of the FEMA floodplain receive a five percent discount. The discounts will automatically be applied to policies at renewal.

The discount is the result of an upgrade in the County’s rating from the National Flood Insurance Program’s (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) - a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages floodplain management activities that exceed the minimum NFIP requirements. Participating communities receive flood insurance premium discounts ranging from 5 to 45 percent. A combination of activities that include public education, regulation enforcement and data maintenance contributed towards the County’s improved rating. As long as the County remains in compliance, the rating and discount will be renewed annually.

Sandra K. Knight, Deputy Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administrator for FEMA, wrote in the announcement letter, “I commend you on your community actions and your determination to lead your community to be more disaster resistant. This commitment enhances public safety, property protection, protects the natural functions of floodplains, and reduces flood insurance premiums.”

Only five percent of the floodplain programs nationwide are involved with the CRS program.

The discount applies to policies issued or renewed on or after May 1, 2010.
