James City County Fire Department responded to 3016 Mossy Creek Drive at 4:28 a.m. on August 4, 2010.  First arriving units found fire in the attached garage.  All occupants were out of the home when the fire department arrived.  The fire was contained and extinguished in the garage.  The fire was reported under control by 4:56.  Smoke was found in the rest of the house.  The house had only one working smoke detector located on the first floor; others had been removed for reasons unknown.  The lone smoke detector alerted the family of the fire.  Several small pets were rescued.  No injuries to occupants or firefighters were reported.  The fire is determined to be accidental upon investigation by the James City County Fire Marshal’s Office.  The cause was improperly discarded smoking materials.  American Red Cross responded to the assist the family.
