HAMPTON ROADS BRIDGE-TUNNEL CLOSING AT 11 AM
Traveling during tropical force winds is not encouraged
HAMPTON ROADS— The I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel will close today at 11 a.m. as a result of sustained tropical force winds in excess of 36 miles-per-hour. Motorists will be diverted before the ingress bridges.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will secure the tide gate at 11 a.m., today, Saturday, August 27. VDOT expects the tunnel to remain closed through the duration of the storm. Based on current storm projections, clean-up crews will begin debris removal Sunday morning, August 28, at 5 a.m.
In the event travel is required, the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel is an alternate route. Motorists are encouraged to suspend travel if possible today and overnight tonight as the storm moves out of the area.
VDOT will continue to monitor all bridges, tunnels and roadways throughout the district.
