The James City County Police Department is investigating a fatal vehicle-pedestrian crash that occurred at 10:10 this morning, January 6 in the 9300 Block of Pocahontas trail.

Ralph Newman Jr., 55 of Yorktown was operating a 1997 Ford dump truck east on Pocahontas Trail and pulled his vehicle off onto the shoulder of the roadway. For some unknown reason, he exited the truck and was struck by a 1992 Volvo driven by Mildred Drews, 82 of Williamsburg. The Volvo sideswiped the dump truck and struck Newman. Newman was airlifted to Norfolk General Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Drews was not injured in the crash.

The crash is under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
