The James City County Police Department encourages local residents to take a stand against auto theft by having their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) etched onto their vehicle's windows. A free VIN etching event will be held on Thursday, April 21 from 2-6 p.m. in the Target parking lot in Monticello Marketplace.

Officers etch the federally-assigned VIN onto the windows using a chemical solution that does not mar the look of the vehicle. The process typically takes 10 minutes per vehicle.

Thieves know that vehicles with etched windows require additional effort and expense before they can be sold. The windows of stolen VIN etched vehicles must be stripped and replaced before the thief can sell the vehicle, reducing their potential profit.

The event is being offered in conjunction with the Virginia State Police's HEAT (Help Eliminate Auto Theft) Program.

For more information, call the Community Services Unit at (757) 253-2058.
