Leo Rogers, County Attorney
U. S. Court certifies Department Of Justice preclearance exemption for JCC
On Thursday, Nov. 9, James City County received the consent decree from the U.S. District Court, Washington D.C. that certifies the County’s compliance with the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The Justice Department performed a thorough review of County election practices and found a demonstrated record of nondiscrimination. The County began the process over a year ago.
Under this exemption, the County will continue to comply with all substantive provisions of the Voting Rights Act except the requirement to seek Department of Justice preclearance for any changes to voting and election practices which will save the County time and money.
