Special Events
Halloween Tales, Free! New
Friday, Oct. 26, 6-8 p.m.
Freedom Park
Enjoy a night in the outdoors for frightful (but not too frightful) Halloween songs and stories. This family event includes “tales around the fire” followed by a viewing of the classic “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.” Dress for the outdoors. Bring lawn chairs and blankets. Teens
Red Cross Babysitting Course (ages 12+)
Saturday, Oct. 20, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
$75; $70 for JC/W residents

This course covers the basics of babysitting – childcare, fire and home safety, first aid plus learn how to set up your business. At the completion of the class, receive a babysitter’s textbook, babysitting certificate and a first aid kit. Bring a bagged lunch. Snacks provided. A variety of art activities are offered based on participant ages, ability levels and interests. Each class features activity stations and a special project based on the week’s theme. Outdoor Adventures
Women’s Mountain Bike Ride, Free!
Saturday, Oct. 6, 9-11 a.m.
Freedom Park
Ladies, join the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association (EVMA) on a women’s-only mountain bike ride! This monthly bicycle ride will take place on the first Saturday of each month through December. Come learn the trail system (a variety of 20+ miles of single-track and double-track trails), meet fellow female riders in the community and learn the ins-and-outs of mountain biking. The ride will include novice (with some instruction) and intermediate/advanced groups that are open to all ages and experience. The ride will be lead by EVMA’s Dirt DivasBring your bike and helmet. Freeride Bike Clinic, Free!

Interested in learning the skills behind riding ramps, drops, ladders or skinnies? Or just brushing up on your freeride style? Join members of EVMA’s Team Ruckus to learn the basics or enhance your current freeride skills. Through a series of safe and fun progressions, this half day clinic is designed to give riders the techniques and skills to take their riding to the next level. Family Kayak Paddle on the Chickahominy River (ages 7+), New

Critters ‘N Creatures Halloween Hike, Free!

It’s a great time of year to get out in nature, explore your surroundings and learn about the creatures that live there. This event is suitable for families with young children and is educational without the spookiness of Halloween. Costumes appropriate for all ages are welcome. Chickahominy Eco-Paddle (ages 15+)

Williamsburg Pickleball Tournament (ages 18+)

Offered in partnership with James City County, the tournament is open to all skill levels. The tournament will be double elimination and will be organized by age groups. All games will be played to 15 points, win by 2. For more information, visit usapa.org.

Learn To Swim Programs
Open registration held Oct. 3-12. After you have successfully passed a class, you can register for the next level during this two-week open registration period. If you’re unsure of your or your child’s swimming needs or level, attend one of the FREE swim evaluations on Tuesday, Oct. 9 or Wednesday, Oct. 10, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the James City County Recreation Center.
