Structure Fire at 5337 Gardner Ct. in James City County

Fire and EMS units from the James City County and City of Williamsburg Fire Departments responded t 12:20 p.m. this afternoon to a structure fire at  5337 Gardner Ct. in the Chisel Run subdivision in central James City County. First arriving units reported smoke and some flames showing from the exterior of the chimney. Personnel conducted a “walk around” of the structure with no immediate hazards noted.

The occupant was outside the structure and confirmed no one else was in the unit. Upon entering the structure, the crews found a 'normal' fire burning in the fireplace with light smoke and haze noted in the room. Another crew searched the attic space and also found light smoke with a small fire at the top of the chimney. Utilizing a small hose line in the attic space, the crew removed the chimney facade from around the flue and extinguished the burning material and removed the remaining debris from the structure. The exterior chimney flue was removed and brought to the ground.  Fire units cleared the scene around 2 p.m.

James City County Fire Marshals responded to the scene to conduct an investigation into the cause which is still pending
