County cooling center open, cooling assistance applications available

 

High temperatures and humidity are expected in the area this week. Need a place to cool off? Citizens and visitors can head to James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Rd. The Center is open Monday-Thursday, 6 a.m.-9 p.m., Friday, 6 a.m.-8 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, 1-6 p.m. Except for service animals, please no pets. For more information, please call 757-259-4200.

 

In addition, James City County's Department of Social Services is now accepting cooling assistance applications. The program provides purchase or repair of cooling equipment and/or payment for electricity to operate cooling equipment. To be eligible, a household must contain at least one vulnerable individual who is age 60 or over, disabled, or under age 6. The maximum gross monthly income (before taxes) for one person is $1,211 and $2,498 for a household of four. Assistance is based on the availability of funds and the deadline to apply is Aug. 15.
