Loaded rifle magazine found at Hornsby Middle School

On Wednesday, September 4 at 11:41a.m, James City County Police responded to Hornsby Middle School on Jolly Pond Road in reference to a loaded rifle magazine that was found on the floor in a classroom located on the second floor. A 7th grade student reported to a teacher that he saw the magazine on the floor in the classroom. School officials contacted the police department. The school was placed on “partial” lockdown and a sweep of the school was conducted by school officials, James City County Police, and Virginia State Police K-9’s. No weapon was recovered. The recovered magazine was a loaded .17 caliber rifle magazine. Several students were questioned. The school was in lockdown for approximately 2 hours while the sweep was being conducted.

Upon further questioning, James City County Police have identified a 7th grade male student responsible for bringing the magazine to the school. There was no weapon involved. The investigation is still on-going and no charges have been filed at this time.
