Structure fire on Maxton Lane in James City County believed to be accidental

The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire on Maxton Lane was accidental in nature. It started in a room near the back of the house as a result of a natural cut Christmas tree being too close to a wall-mounted, propane heater.

The fatality is believed to be the female resident of the dwelling. No positive identification or cause of death has been released pending autopsy results by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Evidence collected by the Fire Marshal’s Office will be submitted to the Division of Forensic Science laboratory for further analysis to confirm initial findings. The investigation remains open pending the results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Division of Forensic Science laboratory.
