  • Tails on the Trail
    Saturday, June 1, 8 a.m.-noon
    $25/passport package
    Freedom Park
    Celebrate National Trails Day with the Heritage Humane Society as they kick off the popular summer series, Tails on the Trail! For $25 a dog, you’ll receive a limited edition Tails on the Trail T-shirt, a bandana for your dog and a PAWS-port outlining six amazing trail adventures to enjoy on select Saturdays all summer long.   • Black Settlement Presentation and Book Signing (all ages), Free!

  • Season Pass Holder Fun Night

    Upper County Park
    This evening of free events is to thank James City County season pool pass holders! Come out for games, prizes, free hotdogs and more! Season passes are good for unlimited visits in 2013 at both Upper County and Chickahominy Riverfront park pools. Passes can be purchased at the James City County Recreation Center, the Satellite Services Center in Toano and at the pool locations. The pools are open weekends, noon – 6 p.m. through June 9; daily operations begin June 14. Info: or call 757-259-5360.
  • Spencer’s Ordinary Wreath Ceremony, Free!
    Wednesday, June 26, 10 a.m.
    Freedom Park
    The Williamsburg Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution will hold a memorial service in honor of the valiant Americans who gave their lives in the Battle of Spencer’s Ordinary on June 26, 1781. A series of skirmishes occurred in the woods and meadows of Freedom Park between units of Lord Cornwallis and those of the French general, Marquis de Lafayette. Info: or call 757-259-4200.

REC Connect

  • Summer Camp
    Registration is underway for summer camp 2013; open to youth ages 5-14 (must have completed kindergarten). Camp will be held Monday-Friday, June 17 - August 23, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. at five elementary schools and Berkeley Middle School. Weekly full-time fee (4-5 days) is $90/week ($85 for JC/W residents) and part-time (3 days or less) $70/week ($65 for JC/W residents). Field trips fees are extra. There is a $10 discount available for second and subsequent children attending full time. Registrations accepted after the deadline on a space available basis.     Chickahominy Riverfront Park

  • Basic Horse Care (ages 9+)

  • The Potter’s Wheel (ages 10-15)

    Learn to spin lumps of clay into cups, bowls and vases using the potter’s wheel. Then make them unique with handles, feet, texture and color! All work will be food, dishwasher and microwave safe.   • Build Confidence Through Adventure (ages 12-18)

  • Stand Up Paddleboarding (ages 14+), New

    Jamestown Beach Park
    New technology has made Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) even easier. Black Dog Paddle has the ONLY Certified ACA SUP instructors in Central Virginia! Lessons cover all the basics as well as safety, strokes, balance and include a shorter tour. All ESSENTIAL gear provided-SUP board, paddle, personal floatation device and leash.   • Women’s Mountain Bike Ride (all ages & abilities), Free!

    Ladies, join the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association’s (EVMA) Dirt Divas on a woman’s-only mountain bike ride! Explore the trail system at Freedom Park, meet fellow female riders in the community and learn the ins-and-outs of mountain biking.   • Park Safety: What to Do If…(all ages & families), Free!

    Register by June 7 to guarantee placement in this exciting summer camp experience provides fun and structured activities for participates with disabilities. Sessions include arts and crafts, swimming, outdoor play, gym games, and community outings to enhance socialization and leisure skills. Sign up for single or multiple weeks!   • Heritage Humane Society Animal Camp (ages 10-14)

    Children will learn animal safety, responsible pet guardianship and about all kinds of animals from pets to wildlife.   • 4-H Engineering Quest (ages 12-16)

  • Hand Drawn Animation (ages 13-16)
    Monday-Friday, June 17-21, 1-3 p.m.

    The basics of animation including the bouncing ball, metamorphosis, squash-n-stretch and character animation taught. Work will be done using both flip book and a zoetrope. No drawing experience needed.  Info: or call 757-259-4200.

  • JCC & Virginia Legacy Recreational & Advanced Soccer Camp (ages 5-14)

    New This Year: girls and boys only camps! These week-long camps include instruction on the fundamentals and are designed to meet the needs of beginner, developmental, recreational and advanced players. All players receive a Legacy Soccer Camp shirt. Daily activities rotate indoors and outdoors and allow time to use the JCCRC indoor swimming pool. Each camp has a full day or half day option. Registration accepted through VA Legacy only. There are two ways to register: 1) Log onto, print out and complete the JCC/VA Legacy Soccer Camp registration and mail your check made payable to Virginia Legacy Soccer Club or 2) Go to and complete the online application making payment with credit card.     The Tradition Golf Club at Stonehouse and Parks and Recreation have partnered to create a fun learning environment as we cover basic fundamentals of the golf swing, rules and etiquette, sportsmanship and competitive situations. Our PGA/LPGA staff will ensure that every camper receives proper swing improvement elements from tee to green, in a very comfortable yet competitive atmosphere (course time included!) Lunch included.   • Learn To Swim Programs
    Open registration held June 5-14 and June 27-July 5. After you have successfully passed a class, you can register for the next level during these two-week open registration periods. If you’re unsure of your or your child’s swimming needs or level, attend one of the FREE swim evaluations on Tuesday, June 11 or Wednesday, June 12, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the James City County Recreation Center.
