Chickahominy Riverfront Park

Register by July 6 and save! This annual bicycle tour begins at Chickahominy Riverfront Park, with rides offered along the Virginia Capital Trail and to Freedom Park, Little Creek Reservoir Park and Upper County Park. Ride options of self-paced family, 15, 30 or 60 miles. Cool off after your ride with a dip in the pool. Fee includes refreshments at rest stops, highlighted maps, support vehicles to help tired riders, lunch and admittance to the Chickahominy Riverfront Park pool. Pregistration forms available at local bike shops, the Centers and at 60/30 mile rides held 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m.; Family/15 mile rides held 9 a.m.-1 p.m. For information and fees, visit or call 757-259-5360. Movies under the Stars, Free

Family Fun Night at the Pool, Free

REC Connect Program


Register now for summer camp 2013, open to youth ages 5-14 who’ve completed kindergarten. Camp held Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. through August 23 at five elementary schools and Berkeley Middle School. Weekly full-time fee (4-5 days) is $90/week ($85 for JC/W residents) and part-time (3 days or less) $70/week ($65 for JC/W residents). Field trips fees are extra. There is a $10 discount available for second and subsequent children attending full time. Registrations accepted on a space available basis. Little Tykes Summer Camp (ages 3-5; must be potty trained)

Heritage Humane Society Animal Camp (ages 5-14)

Ages 5-9: Monday-Friday, July 8-12, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Kidz-R-Cookin’ – Around the World (ages 5-14), New
Monday-Thursday, July 15-18:

Days of Discovery Camp (ages 5-21 with disabilities)      
Monday-Thursday through August 8, noon-4:30 p.m. (after summer school dismissal)
Norge Elementary School
This exciting summer camp experience provides fun and structured activities for participates with disabilities. Sessions include arts and crafts, swimming, outdoor play, gym games and community outings to enhance socialization and leisure skills. Sign up for single or multiple weeks! Rec Running Club Camp (ages 7-13)
Mondays & Wednesdays, July 29-August 28, 9-11 a.m.
$55; $50 for JC/W residents
Meet us at various locations around the County to run, jog, walk and learn about getting fit! Our goal is the Recovery Rocks 5K at York River State Park at the end of the summer. Mermaid Camp (ages 8-12)
Monday-Friday, July 15-19, 1-4:30 p.m.
$65; $60 for JC/W residents

Explore your inner mermaid in a fun, creative environment! Activities include underwater performance and basic synchronized swimming skills in the pool, mermaid themed crafts, mermaid makeovers and more. Some activities will take place in deep water; participants must be able to swim 25 yards, and tread water for one minute with no assistance. Info: or call 757-259-4185.


Junior 4-H Scientist Adventures Camp (9-13 years)
Monday-Friday, July 8-12, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
$130; $125 for JC/W residents

Make science and engineering come alive by extracting DNA from a strawberry, launching a rocket, designing a boat, exploring wildlife habitats and more. We’ll experiment with the science of agriculture in two field trips – one to the Randolph Farm at Virginia State University in Petersburg and the other to the Science Museum of Virginia in Hampton. Aviation Summer Camp (ages 9-13)
Monday-Friday, July 15-19, 9 a.m.-noon
James City County Recreation Center
Get introduced to aerodynamics, airplane controls and design and learn about the forces that act upon an airplane while in flight. A visit to the airport is included, where we’ll experience the cockpit of a Cessna as well as a trip to an aerospace museum. We’ll also compete in a rocket building contest and learn to compute distance using mathematical formulas. Fee includes all materials, a T-shirt and snacks. Info: or call 757-369-5004.

BAM It’s FLAM! Spanish Camp (ages 10+), New

Mountain Bike Adventures Camp (ages 10-14), New
Wednesday-Friday, July 17-19, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
$50; $45 for JC/W residents

Explore the fantastic trails, improve your riding techniques and learn bike maintenance in this active, fun-filled week of mountain biking. Trails vary from 2-5 miles. Bike, helmet and close-toed shoes required.  Info: or call 757-259-4200.


Video Shorts! Camp (ages 13-15)
Monday-Friday, July 8-12, 1-5 p.m.

Community Video Center
These days, the most popular videos aren’t on television, they’re viral videos shared online. Design a video for JCC and see if it takes off! Camp will involve taping at various County locations. JCC & Virginia Legacy Recreational & Advanced Soccer Camp (ages 5-14, boys and girls camps)

These week-long camps include instruction on the fundamentals and are designed to meet the needs of beginner, developmental, recreational and advanced players. All players receive a Legacy Soccer Camp shirt. Daily activities rotate indoors and outdoors and allow time to use the JCCRC indoor swimming pool. Each camp has a full day or half day option. The Joe Henzel Baseball Camp (ages 6-12)
Ages 6-8: Monday-Thursday, July 8-11, 9 a.m.-noon

WJCC/CAA Summer Basketball Camps (ages 7-14)

Learn the fundamentals of the golf swing, rules and etiquette, sportsmanship and competitive situations. Our PGA/LPGA staff will ensure that every camper receives proper swing improvement elements from tee to green, in a very comfortable yet competitive

Fencing Camp (ages 8-14)
Two sessions offered:
Monday-Friday, July 15-19 at the James River Community Center: Ages 8-10: 9 a.m.-noon and Ages 11-14: 1-4 p.m.
Monday-Friday, July 22-26 at the James City County Recreation Center: Ages 8-10: 9 a.m.-noon and Ages 11-14: 1-4 p.m.

Learn the basics of fencing, from proper stance and movement to scoring points with the foil. On the last day, we’ll fence an in-camp tournament for friends and family. All equipment provided. Wear comfortable, movement-friendly clothing and sneakers or similar shoes. Info: or call 757-259-4200.

New technology has made Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) even easier! Black Dog Paddle has the ONLY Certified ACA SUP Instructors in Central Virginia, so you’re sure to receive the best possible instruction! Lessons cover all the basics as well as safety, strokes, balance and include a shorter tour. All ESSENTIAL gear provided-SUP board, paddle, personal floatation device and leash. Ladies, join the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association’s (EVMA) Dirt Divas on a woman’s-only mountain bike ride! Explore the trail system at Freedom Park, meet fellow female riders in the community and learn the ins-and-outs of mountain biking. Beginning Spinning Workshop (ages 12+)
Saturday, July 13, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

In this beginning level class, you’ll learn about yarn from plant and animal fibers (goats, alpaca, cotton and flax plants). Prepare fiber for spinning and spin wool fibers on a spindle. Learn how to select a spinning wheel and transition from spinning with a spindle to spinning on a wheel. No experience needed. Info: or call 757-259-4200.


Oil Painting (ages 16+)

Ditch the workout and join the party! Zumba® is a fun and effective cardio workout with sculpting exercises designed to tone the entire body from top to bottom. Learn To Swim Programs
Open registration held July 10-19. After you have successfully passed a class, you can register for the next level during this two-week open registration period. If you’re unsure of your or your child’s swimming needs or level, attend one of the FREE swim evaluations on Tuesday, July 17 or Wednesday, July 18, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the James City County Recreation Center. Holiday Closings


The James City County Recreation Center, James River Community Center and the Freedom Park Interpretive Center will be closed on July 4, 2013 in observance of Independence Day.
