Archery 101 (ages 9-13)

In this course designed for beginning to intermediate ability, participants learn the safe use and handling of recurve bows and arrows, stance, aiming, firing, and care of the archery equipment. Archaeology 101 (ages 18+)

Work with professional archaeologists to learn about and to assist in uncovering our community’s past. Field work included (on Saturday) at a real dig site near the Vermillion house on Jamestown Road. Dress for the outdoors and dirt on Saturday. The Great Park Pursuit!

In this self-guided program, you’ll be challenged to visit at least nine of our parks over the course of a year. Women’s Mountain Bike Ride (all ages and abilities), Free!

Ladies, join the Eastern Virginia Mountain Bike Association’s (EVMA) Dirt Divas on a woman’s-only mountain bike ride! Explore Freedom Park’s trail system, meet fellow female riders in the community and learn the ins-and-outs of mountain biking. Start a garden revolution in the Grove community! Learn how to grow your own food and enjoy the taste of food you grow. Neighborhood community gardens are unique, and offer numerous benefits including physical and spiritual health, community building, neighborhood beautification and neighborhood solidarity. Our Native Trees, Free!

Learn the basics of horse safety, daily care, grooming and more with these hands-on classes designed for child and parent. You’ll have the chance to ride one of our horses in the last class. Pysanka: Eastern European Folk Art (ages 13+)

R.A.D Basic Physical Defense (ages 14+), Free!

The R.A.D system (Rape Aggression Defense) is a program of realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques. It’s a comprehensive 12-hour course for women that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. Spin and Strengthen (ages 14+)

Learn To Swim
Open registration held Oct. 2-11. After you have successfully passed a class, you can register for the next level during this two-week open registration period. If you’re unsure of your or your child’s swimming needs or level, attend one of the FREE swim evaluations on Tuesday, Oct. 8 or Wednesday, Oct. 9, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the James City County Recreation Center.
