Printing error causes confusion in some JCC real estate tax bills

Some James City County real estate tax bills mailed on Friday, Oct. 25 may have contained an error in the mailing address due to a printing mistake. The County has confirmed that no personal information was compromised. Corrected bills will be mailed by the end of the week and the due date for payments will remain Dec. 5 as bills are mailed earlier than required.

Since the error was not found by either the printer or the County during the proofing process, the cost for new tax bills will be divided between the two. The printer will pay for the reprinting and the County will pay for the postage. The total cost of the second mailing is not known at this time, but postage is expected to be less than $5,000.

Approximately 16,000 real estate tax bills were involved. A crossover in the database caused unrelated account names to be added to the second line. The parcel information and tax amounts in the bills were correct. Only bills mailed to personal addresses were involved. Bills mailed to mortgage companies were not affected.
