James City County Police to conduct VIN etching and child safety seat check station

The James City County Police Department in conjunction with Virginia State Police will conduct VIN etching on May 23 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Target parking lot on Monticello Avenue. VIN etching is a countermeasure to motor vehicle theft that involves etching a vehicle's VIN onto its windows using a chemical solution to reduce the value of a stolen vehicle to thieves. It also can be helpful to police in recovering a stolen vehicle. Vehicles with VIN-etched windows may be eligible for insurance rate reductions in some states.

In addition, police will also conduct a child safety seat check station at this same location. The child safety seat check station will check child safety seats for recalls, proper installation, proper placement, and usage.

Both of these services are being offered free of charge and only take a short time to complete.
